Transition 89 is an audiovisual collaboration between LIA and the electronic music duo @c (Pedro Tudela and Miguel Carvalhais). The generative visuals are a direct transcription of the composition “89”, which was created during a residency in the Fujaco region of Portugal.
The title refers to the work’s central algorithmic process: a slow, continuous metamorphosis of a single geometric element. As this element transitions over time from one shape into another, it fundamentally alters the texture and behavior of the entire system, shifting the visual landscape in reaction to the audio dynamics.
The work has been exhibited internationally as a large-scale video installation. For the exhibition “If this is the answer, what is the question?” at the MAK (Austrian Museum of Applied Arts), the piece was presented as Transition 89 – 2.0. In this site-specific iteration, the work was projected onto two suspended screens arranged at a slight angle, creating an immersive architectural structure within the exhibition space. The work was also featured in major group exhibitions at Sonos Studios in Los Angeles and Akbank Sanat in Istanbul, where LIA was exhibited alongside artists including Refik Anadol, Quayola, and Larry Cuba.
