The Lonely One In Autumn is a generative audiovisual work with a soundtrack by @c (Miguel Carvalhais and Pedro Tudela). The piece is directly inspired by Gustav Mahler’s “Der Einsame im Herbst” from “Das Lied der Erde.”
The software system for this project was originally developed for a live performance at the Lied Lab 2011: Gustav Mahler Festival at the ORF RadioKulturhaus in Vienna. This studio version is a distinct reinterpretation, pairing the generative visuals with a new electronic score. The algorithm develops shapes and colors that reference the images invoked by Mahler’s lyrics: frosted textures, bluish fog, and forms reminiscent of frozen grass.
“Autumn fog creeps bluishly over the lake.
Every blade of grass stands frosted
As though an artist had jade-dust
over the fine flowers strewn.”– Gustav Mahler, “Der Einsame im Herbst”
