radio_int.14/37 is a generative audiovisual collaboration between LIA and the Portuguese experimental music collective @c (Miguel Carvalhais and Pedro Tudela). The work was commissioned by the electronic label Crónica for the compilation “Essays on Radio,” inviting artists to interpret the medium of radio as a sound medium, technology, and cultural form.
The visual composition is defined by a rigorous formal reduction. A dominant horizontal line splits the picture plane, acting as a generator. Reacting to the acoustic impulses of the soundtrack, the line emits nervous light rays and vibrating waves into the black ether, creating a visual translation of signal transmission and interference.
The work is distributed by Sixpackfilm and has been exhibited internationally, including at the Kunsthaus Dresden, Centre Pompidou, and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
radio_int.14/37 (2005), generative audiovisual work. Curated excerpt.
Selected generative outputs.
The Concept
Minimal is maximal: radio_int.14/37 is formal reduction of the finest kind. From a horizontal white line that splits the picture field in the middle, nervous light rays flutter into black ether. […] As though the sound waves were suddenly visible, they increasingly spin a fine net of thin vibrating lines and waves across the screen, which are consistently arrested by the dominant horizontal, the generator, which reacting to acoustic impulses, sends the visual signals off into space like electric eruptions.
