LMLB03: Generative Glitch Art

LMLB03 is an interactive software artwork commissioned in 2003 by the Lovebytes Festival in Sheffield, UK. Created by LIA in collaboration with Miguel Carvalhais, the work was released as part of the DSP 3 CD-ROM compilation, featuring generative works by Nullpointer and Kurt Ralske.

The software presents two evolving layers of audiovisual elements that react to user interaction through unspecified, hidden rules. The system allows for the manipulation of foreground and background layers, creating dynamic sequences of animation and sound.

In 2010, the work was selected for ‘Sm_Art Mistakes’ at the Share Prize Festival in Turin. Curated by Simona Lodi, the exhibition contextualized LMLB03 within the history of Glitch Art, framing the aestheticization of digital error as a distinct artistic language.

The Concept

This piece of pure glitch art is the work of two leading software artists who produce self-generative art. Here, software is not used as a mere tool but is applied as an artistic language, just like the square used in Kazimir Malevič’s works is not a geometric plane figure but an abstract work. In this art work, glitch, or unusual and unexpected malfunction, is the aestheticization of digital errors that are specially created by the artists to obtain a visual result and create an unpredictable element. The artists use glitch art to set into motion a process for the reappropriation of error, enabling them to explore the artistic scope of software’s intrinsic properties.
