Between 2010 and 2011, LIA was commissioned to create live visual interpretations for the ‘Lied Lab’ festival series at the ORF RadioKulturhaus in Vienna. Organized by departure (The Creative Agency of the City of Vienna), the project established a dialogue between the classical tradition of the Lied and contemporary digital art.
The series focused on two major anniversaries in classical music. In 2010, for the 150th birthday of Hugo Wolf, LIA developed visuals for 33 songs based on texts by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. In 2011, for the centenary of Gustav Mahler’s death, she created generative systems for his major song cycles, including Das Lied von der Erde.
The software was designed to react to the live audio input while allowing for real-time parameter manipulation. The visuals were performed live alongside pianist Russell Ryan and vocalists including Hermine Haselböck, Bernhard Berchtold, Florian Boesch, Wolfgang Holzmair, and Alexander Kaimbacher. Both cycles were subsequently recorded and released as part of the Hugo Wolf and Gustav Mahler Collector’s Editions.
