ITAF: Teletext Series

For the International Teletext Art Festival (ITAF), LIA created a series of five pixel art works designed for broadcast on national television infrastructure. Unlike her typical generative practice, these works were drawn pixel-by-pixel using the specialized CebraText 1.1 editor.

The series utilizes the single pixel as a basic building block. The images explore the idea of algorithms by varying the distances between lines and pixels to create defined patterns, while exploiting the intense contrast between black and white elements demanded by the medium’s limitations.

In four of the five works, the standard teletext “flash” command is used to establish a hierarchical order. This function creates a clear boundary between static and dynamic elements without using traditional animation. The blinking effect allows specific forms to appear and disappear; without this function, the dynamic elements would be lost amongst the static background.

The works were broadcast via ARD Text (Germany), ORF TELETEXT (Austria), and SWISS TELETEXT, and exhibited physically in Berlin and Pori, Finland.
