G.S.I.L.XII/+: A Generative Audiovisual Work

G.S.I.L.XII/+ is a generative audiovisual collaboration between LIA and the Portuguese experimental music collective @c (Miguel Carvalhais, Pedro Tudela and Pedro Almeida). Created for the release of their album + (Variz, 2002), the work synchronizes geometric patterns with specific phases of the musical composition.

The visual focus is a recurring star-shaped element that corresponds to the smallest sound unit. These forms are layered with colored ring-shaped figures and cross-hatching textures that react directly to electronic feedback and overtones within the track. The density of the geometric texture is determined by the intensity of the musical input.

The work is distributed by Sixpackfilm and has been screened at Sonic Acts, EMAF, and Wien Modern. In 2025, it was selected for the exhibition ‘History Encoded’ at Kanvas Gallery in Dubai, where it was presented as an immersive multi-channel installation.

The Concept

This white trident […] resembles the stylized fighter jets in early computer games, dynamically shaped guitars played by hard-rock bands, and also biological spores or biomorphic weapons. […] To the rhythm of @c’s music, the star-shaped cascades are joined by a number of colored ring-shaped figures which begin to ”virally” infect the abstract geometric tableau from the edges of the picture. […] Finally, dividing lines and thread-like patterns begin to enter the picture – a sign that a tabula rasa must be created where a new, fully synthetic world is supposed to evolve.
