Aus Lage [in Arbeit] is an interactive generative installation created in 2003 by LIA in collaboration with Miguel Carvalhais. Commissioned by The Media Centre in Huddersfield for the Medialounge, the work served as a centerpiece for the Ultrasound 2003 festival.
Conceived as a “digital tableau vivant,” the installation was designed as a critical response to the fast-paced, reaction-based interactivity common at the time. Instead of rewarding movement, the system responds to stillness. Using camera tracking to monitor the room, the software analyzes the presence of the audience. When the space is quiet and static, the visual composition blooms into a full spectrum of color and complex forms. If motion is detected, the system reacts by draining the color, fading back to monochrome.
The work generates an ongoing, evolving composition of audio and visuals, controlled by overlapping time cycles that ensure the tableau continually re-generates itself over the long duration of the exhibition.
