Animal Imagination: Live Audiovisual Performance

Animal Imagination originated as a collaborative live audiovisual project between LIA and the Norwegian musician Espen Sommer Eide (Phonophani). The work was developed for live performances in Stavanger and Bergen, Norway.

LIA’s custom generative software functioned as a visual instrument, reacting to audio input from a sound mixer to control parameters of abstract shapes and colors. Keyboard input further allowed for dynamic manipulation of the visuals during the performance. This real-time interaction guided the system to produce evolving geometric forms and organic patterns, abstracting ideas derived from observations of nature and animals.

Following the live performances, the generative system was used to create a series of 50 unique, two-minute video iterations, each capturing a distinct aesthetic output from the original code base.

Animal Imagination (2017), visual documentation of the generative system. Excerpt from a series of 50 unique silent video outputs. The original project originated as a live audiovisual performance with a live-performed soundtrack.
