The exhibition of the multipart video project G.S.I.L. by the media artist Lia is presented at Kunstverein Medienturm and on the BIX façade of the Kunsthaus Graz. On display at Kunstverein Medienturm are several exemplary video works of the series in an installative context.

Lia’s media intervention “INT.5_27/G.S.I.L.XXXI” sets up a temporary architecture that explores issues of “site-specifity” on the basis of an audio-visual interpretation. The visual starting point for the recording of the BIX façade of the Kunsthaus in Graz is Lia’s video “INT.5_27/G.S.I.L.XXX” (sound: @c; plug-in: Geoff Smith) of the EDITION Medienturm, adapted to the special features of the place. A generative application reacts to an external sound source, in this case to the environmental noises on the main bridge facing the Kunsthaus Graz, which is transmitted by radio to the control unit (W-LAN) of the BIX façade and finally translated into visual material. Reduced graphic basic elements react by change of position, rotation and size and thus give abstract, visual feedback on the site-specific sound.

Media expert Christian Höller perceives a reductive, suggestive character in Lia’s working method. “The digital video productions of the graphics progammer Lia are dominated by patterns and processes of a more complex mathematics. Synchronous with the accompanying soundtracks, they generate serial proliferous shapes and at times lyrically concentrated forms. In the, so far thirty parts comprising series G.S.I.L. that is in large part accompanied by the music of the Portuguese Electronica duo @c, always two or three reduced basic patterns are in a phase-accurate way tuned to the beats and bleeps of the given music. Electronic carrier signals are – dependent on the musical input level – translated into more or less dense hatchings, which virtually begin to fill up the image space in an ‘autopoetic’ approach. The result: whizzing Electronica arabesques, continuously growing and fading, or in other words: a psycho test for advanced minimalists.”
